James R. Singer, D.O.
Dr. Singer joined Iowa Retina Consultants in 2016. He is an AUPO-fellowship trained, board certified surgical retina specialist focusing on treatment of diseases affecting the macula, retina, and vitreous. He is originally from Fort Dodge, Iowa where he graduated as valedictorian. Dr. Singer then attended the University of Iowa where he graduated with honors earning a BS and BA majoring in pre-medicine, integrative physiology, and sociology. He received his medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine graduating in the top 10% of his class. He performed at the 94th-98th percentile on all three of his national medical licensing board exams during medical school and residency. His ophthalmology residency training was completed at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Metro Health Hospital. Dr. Singer received his fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at Associated Retina Consultants in Phoenix, Arizona, one of the highest volume surgical programs in the country.
While in Phoenix, Dr. Singer served as clinical instructor at Maricopa Medical Center assisting in the training of residents and medical students from the Wills Eye Hospital and University of Arizona. During residency, he also helped mentor numerous Michigan State medical students. Dr. Singer has published in several peer-reviewed journals and has also served as a peer-reviewer himself. He remains active in education and research as he has authored and/or coauthored three ophthalmology textbook chapters since joining Iowa Retina.
Dr. Singer is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Osteopathic Colleges of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AOCOO-HNS), and the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology (IAO). He has presented and/or lectured at several national and regional conferences including the AAO, AOCOO-HNS, as well as the Iowa Optometric Association. He also has a passion for volunteer work—Dr. Singer has performed many sight-restoring surgeries in Guinea and Congo with Mercy Ships (featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes) and in Peru with Medical Ministries International.
Although Dr. Singer enjoys all aspects of vitreoretinal surgery, his true passion is his family. He resides in Urbandale with his wife and two daughters. His free time is spent traveling, hunting, and he enjoys fishing central Iowa’s lakes with his wife and children.
