Sushant Wagley, M.D.
Dr. Wagley joined Iowa Retina Consultants in 2022. Originally from Kathmandu, Nepal – Dr. Wagley grew up in the metro-Detroit area of Michigan. He received his undergraduate degree with honors in Community Health from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan for medical school. During medical school he was awarded multiple scholarships and travelled to Nepal to conduct research on the delivery of medical and surgical ophthalmological care in resource limited settings. Dr. Wagley also completed two years of clinical research in vitreoretinal diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School. He finished his ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota where he was selected to serve as the Chief Resident and received the Harry Plotke Award for his clinical skills, compassion, and patient-centric approach. He then completed vitreoretinal fellowship at VitreoRetinal Surgery (now Retina Consultants of Minnesota) in Minneapolis. During fellowship he was selected as Vit-Buckle Society’s top 8 fellows in the country.
Dr. Wagley has a keen interest in research and has published multiple articles in various peer-reviewed journals. He has given talks at various national and international medical meetings. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, America Nepal Medical Foundation, and The Society of Royce Fellows. He is passionate about global health and the delivery of medical care in underserved areas. He has worked to help establish a hospital in rural Nepal and most recently travelled to Timor Leste to teach Timorese ophthalmology residents techniques in retinal examination, imaging, and surgery.
Outside of ophthalmology, Dr. Wagley enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid traveler and is always seeking to explore cultures and cuisines all over the world. He enjoys the arts, cooking, hiking, and downhill skiing.
